very healthy. the fatter, top fish fought the hell out of me, really thought I had a 35" range fish. all the fish I caught were filled out with nice bellies, so much bait around in the backbays right now.

The bellies of those stripers were not full of bait, it was eggs!  I can't believe they are not spawned out.

Thanks for the harvest Chris!  I need more fillets!

Chris, would you recommend targeting the backbays/sods right now or hitting jetties for stripers and blues? Is this a viable option during the day down there right now? I may get down over the next couple of days, just trying to line things up.

depends what you wanna catch... it really doesnt matter, backbay sods and bridges are producing nicely as youve seen.. you can catch these fish during the day, but night is better. the beaches up north are popping off with slammer blues and smaller bass, which is a day bite. Think im heading up to IBSP tomorrow to try and get in on the action. its onnnn... its been on, and its not even may!

There's a lot of blues coming through right now. If you're going down bring some metal.

Blues and or bass works for me. I am thinking about trying IBSP on Sunday or early next week. It has been a few years since I have been there, I miss it.

I was fishing in IBSP friday night till sat afternoon.

friday night was slow, so in low tide we started collecting crabs for Tog later in the morning.. Only ro find out that Tog season is closed May 1st.

Nothing too special for the most part, saturday early morning the blues started hitting, and for about an hour the bite did not stop.

Fish off the surf-
Bunker seemed to work for us the best. (even tho i almost broke my arm using every single lure i had)

I used to only fish the salt via boat until a few years ago when we decided not to spend the $$$ on a slip for the year. Ever since I've spent countless hours learning to surf fish and more often then not I can put fish on the bank just as well as I ever did with the boat. The biggest problem most guys have is having the patience to study the bottom at low tide to find where the fish will be sitting (channels, sodbanks, ect) once the tide comes in  :D :D

Never complain about the Blues, if they are slammers they are fun if they are smaller they are good to eat.
Went down Friday steady inlet action on metal and teasers, Not as good as it was last week but did get my first Double header in.
Had way too many teasers bite offs though. Also stopped to soak bait in the back for a about 2 hours landed another 2 nice sized blues,
after giving up on the clam which was not being touched.
Kept 3 medium sized blues for my "ingelegde vis" recipe which turned out better than ever.

I don't mind the blues so much when I'm there to target them but thats not what I was looking for. Once I started getting them on bait I switched to chucking plugs, metal, ect and they weren't touching it  ???

Donated a half dozen hooks to them gators this morning. Lost a small (20" maybe) bass at the sod and managed to land this small guy:

I've still yet to see a bass caught down there (back Raritan Bay) that isn't a resident fish  ???  With the bunker and blues around it just don't make any sense to me. Oh well, I'm tired of the backbay anyway. Tomorrow I'm taking the hike along the ocean side of the hook and seeing what I can find  ;D

So many choices for this weekend. I have off friday and monday. I badly wanna catch some of those big blues before they move out, but I also wanna get some more big stripers and see if there are any weakies around yet. I love springtime.

I hear you on that one. My fishing plans for this Wednesday (I am off) are in need of a change due to the Susky and Skuke being flooded from the rains. Bye shad!

Torn between taking the yak for an all day musky hunt or blasting down the shore for a shot at some blues or stripers.

Hit the same spot as this morning at dark till midnight after telling myself all day I was done fishing the bay...just didn't feel like driving 50 miles to the ocean side when the bay spot is 20 miles  ;D...even after dark I'll still getting hit by blues  ??? ???  :-\ :-\

Lost a mid 30" bass right at the sodbanks within 20 minutes of getting there on a clam and then it was mostly blues the rest of the night on cut shad. Only had a few hits on the clams landing 1 bass at 24" and landed about a half dozen small blues on shad.
